War Memorial Tree - Veterans Description for Public
The War Memorial Tree on the north-east corner of Albert Street and Union is a ninety year old gum tree planted in 1915 by Toc Maher on behalf of Mrs Charlie Morrissey, who owned the Hardware Shop and the Butcher Shop on the South-West corner of Union and Powlett Streets. It is recorded that Toc was used to cart water from the main street by bucket to save this tree from dying.
