Statement of Significance
Recommended Level of Significance: Local
Erected in about 1920, the Mickleham War Memorial is of local historical and social significance as a representative example of the simple stone memorials erected by the residents of many rural communities to commemorate local participation in the Great War (World War I). Its significance is enhanced by the addition - on one side of the memorial - of the names of those in the district who served in World War II, and by the existence of the original enclosure.
In its prominent position on the roadside, a short distance from the former school building of Mickleham School No.1051 and opposite the former Methodist church, the memorial is a significant structure in the streetscape, and in the interpretation of the history of the community. It is further enhanced by the avenue of mature eucalytus trees within which it is set.

Mickleham War Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Mickleham War Memorial, on Mickleham Road, was erected in about 1920 to commemorate the First World War. Soon after the First World War ended, members of the local community held a meeting - apparently at the instigation of a Mr Doyle, owner of the now demolished Risborough Park - to discuss the erection of a memorial to those from the district who had fought in the war, a number of whom had lost their lives. A committee was formed and subscriptions were sought from within the local community, who must have responded well because the memorial was apparently completely paid for upon its erection.
On the main obelisk-shaped portion of the memorial the words 'In Honor of the brave men who enlisted from this district to serve in the Great War 1914-1918 for God and Country' were engraved. Later, a further line was added - ' also for the men and women who served in the Second World War 1939-1945.'

A simple timber and wire mesh fence with a single gate encircles a small enclosure in which the monument is centred.
The sitting of the memorial was quite well considered, in that it was placed close to the Mickleham School so that the children could help with the upkeep of the monument and the flower plantings around it. A flagpole was also erected close to the monument but this has since been removed. It is further enhanced by the avenue of mature eucalyptus trees within which it is set.
