Drummond War Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Drummond Memorial Cairn, on Mainsbury Road, is an obelisk constructed of rough-faced granite blocks. An inset panel of polished granite lists the names ofthe fallen. The call to war in 1914 led to forty-eight of Drummond's men enlisting to fight. Eleven servicemen were killed on the battle-fields. To mark the loyalty and dedication of these men in perpetuity the residents of Drummond formed themselves into a Patriotic League. The League carried out three memorial works: an Avenue of Honour consisting of forty-eight trees in honour of the men who enlisted, a Memorial Cairn in honour of the fallen, and a School Honour Roll.
The unveiling of the Drummond War Memorial took place at a ceremony held on May 24th 1920. It was unveiled by Lieutenant-Colonel G.Hurry The School Honour Roll is housed in the Drummond Primary School and was unveiled in June 1922 by Colonel Hurry. Gum trees were first planted in the Avenue of Honour but these became grub infested and were pulled out and replaced by a Mr Holdenson. Each tree held the name of a resident who enlisted.
