MARIBYRNONG PERMACITE AND CLAY POTTERIES WHARF - History
The Burton Cresent Reserve (Maribyrnong) was the former site of a ceramic insulator factory, the Maribyrnong Permacite and Clay Potteries, which made heavy pottery ware such as beakers, jugs and insulators in the early 1900's. The factory was said to have first manufactured heavy drinking containers during the First World War, and raw materials for the pottery were obtained further upstream from the old sandpits and near Steel's Creek. A concrete wharf was located on the riverbank for loading lighterage barges to transport product to Melbourne.
MARIBYRNONG PERMACITE AND CLAY POTTERIES WHARF - Interpretation of Site
A raised concrete lip on the wharf's edge contains evidence of eight iron pipes probably used as a later handrail addition. Four dolphin piles approx 5m to the east of the wharf are later additions which were installed in the 1980s and was used when larger flat bottomed vessels could be navigated up to this point and used the wharf to offload (Somerville, pers comms). This is the only example of a former ceramic factory wharf, and the only extant example of a barge wharf and associated dolphins in the river.
