JACK JONES' SLIPWAY AND BOATBUILDING YARD - History
A slipway and boatbuilders facility was situated here in the 1920/30's (Vines, 1989: np). Jack Jones built small fishing boats and yachts, and also hired boats to young people and operated river cruises on Sunday afternoons. The site is now occupied by a private residence, which was once locally known as Manfred Stables.
JACK JONES' SLIPWAY AND BOATBUILDING YARD - Interpretation of Site
The retaining wall is probably part of the former facility, and may have been used as a floor support for the former slipway facility. The site is of social significance and is one of the few examples of a boatbuilding facility of its period left on the Maribyrnong river.
Heritage Inventory Description
JACK JONES' SLIPWAY AND BOATBUILDING YARD - Heritage Inventory Description
Parts of the former slipway are evident in the current beaching wall (indicated by a change in the size of the bluestone rocks used), and a retaining wall approx 20 m from the shore is probably the foundations of the former boatshed.
Bluestone slip, possible archaeological deposits associated with former use both on the river bed and on land.
