SANDRIDGE BEACH BALLAST MOUND #2 - History
The area was part of the Hobsons Bay Anchorage, which has been in continuous use since at least the 1850s. However, these mounds lies in an exposed region south of Point Gellibrand, and may have been discarded by incoming vessels rather than those at anchor.SANDRIDGE BEACH BALLAST MOUND #2 - Interpretation of Site
Review listing of ballast mounds in inventory with view to moving them to theShipwreck database. This is to occur November 2008. Entry 30th May 2008.
Ballast Mound - discovered by Peter Taylor but not inspected by Heritage Victoria. The site appears to be a pile of ballast stone thrown overboard from a vessel as no timber or iron wreckage from a wreck was associated with it. It may have been deposited when the vessl was being resupplied with a cargo, and the ballast was dumped overboard. This is one of two ballast mounds in Port Melbourne and one of seven known in Hobsons Bay. Example of the importance of these areas as early anchorages.
