COWDEROY STREET DRAIN CULVERT - History
This drain is shown on Cox's 1894 plan projecting into the sea at the end of Cowderoy St, and again in 1925 (Reed) this time with a jetty attached.COWDEROY STREET DRAIN CULVERT - Interpretation of Site
A culvert drain outlet is still located on this site, but is shorter than the feature shown on the historical plan. As most drains encountered in this region had concrete culvert outlets and appear to have had a dual role as jetties, the piles may be part of the jetty extension that was attached to the former drain culvert. Any previous culvert may have been removed as part of the foreshore beautification project from 1920's onwards. This site is an example of the practice of installing a jetty next to the drain outlet. The drain had the benefit of deepening the berthing area for vessels. The site is of local significance.
Heritage Inventory Description
COWDEROY STREET DRAIN CULVERT - Heritage Inventory Description
The roughly lined bluestone drain is about 0.5m deep, and feeds into an open cut through the beach dunes out into the bay. Two timber piles were located in the outlet stream at the western end of the cut on either side, and could be associated with the former drain.
