28-32 WELLINGTON STREET, PORT ALBERT - History
The earliest cottage on the property has been built by 1848. A second cottage was built between 1848 and 1854. Both cottages were standing in the 1880s, but the earlier cottage had been demolished by 1940. The second, later cottage was bulldozed between 1989-91. The cottages appear to have been the residences of harbour department employees. The earliest known resident of the 1840 cottage was John Thomas (in cottage by 1866, left 1900), while the second, later coattge was probably first lived in by Edward Luttrell (in by 1854, left 1863), then by William Brown (1863 to 1886).28-32 WELLINGTON STREET, PORT ALBERT - Interpretation of Site
The area of anomalies behind the known location of the 1840s cottage is most probably associated with that cottage and thus forms the core of the site's current archaeological significance. Most of the other anomalies appear to be associated with the concrete septic tank system, although the anomalies just north of the bulldoze scrape could be associated with the cottage.
