FORMER WARRNAMBOOL TOLL HOUSE - History
Little is known about the toll house other than it was on the road to Allansford Bridge and was established in early-mid 1850s. The construction materials used in the toll house are not known,FORMER WARRNAMBOOL TOLL HOUSE - Interpretation of Site
The ground along the southern edge of the Princes Highway is cut along its northern edge, probably for a much earlier road alignment. This has formed an upper terrace and has created an embankment ranging in height from 1 to 2 metres, the base of which runs along the edge of a footpath. On the north side of the footpath the ground slopes down by 1 to 1.5 metres over a distance of around 5 metres to the Princes Highway. On the upper terrace there is some discolouration in the grass nearer to the western side of the site, suggesting the possibility of buried features just below the surface. Four limestone fragments were seen exposed in the embankment near the discoloured grass. One of the fragments appeared squared.
The remains that could be expected to be present of the toll house would be footings (post holds, strip footings of brick or rock), possibly underfloor deposits, surface drains, refuse and cess pits, as well as post holes associated with fencing. Such remains would be more fragmentary within the residential allotments.
FORMER WARRNAMBOOL TOLL HOUSE - Archaeological Significance
The archaeological remains of the site would provide information on the living conditions of those who lived and worked in the toll house.
FORMER WARRNAMBOOL TOLL HOUSE - Historical Significance
The toll house represents the increasing importance of Warrnambool as a regional centre as evidenced through the increase in vehicular traffic which required the establishment of good roads and the means with which to pay for their construction
