GREEN TENT ROAD, BLUESTONE FOUNDATIONS - History
In 1867, gold had been discovered at Steiglitz and Morrisons, both on the Moorabool River, east of Meredith. With the discovery of gold came an increase in people, settlement and transport in Meredith. Opposite the site recorded in this inventory site card, there is an area east of the Midland Highway labelled Green Tent Creek, and it includes markings of a green tent site. The area was a settlement/camp for miners. This may relate to the bluestone foundations and ceramic and glass scatter recorded at the intersection of Green Tent Road and the Midland Highway.GREEN TENT ROAD, BLUESTONE FOUNDATIONS - Interpretation of Site
The bluestone and slate foundations inidicate a kitchen or gathering area of some kind. There appears to be entrances to the north and south of the foundation. The scatter of ceramic, and glass bottles also support the idea of a gathering or kitchen area.
GREEN TENT ROAD, BLUESTONE FOUNDATIONS - Archaeological Significance
Despite the site having been ploughed over and the ceramic and glass scatter being dragged 200m or so, the foundations are in relatively good condition. The site has potential to hold local and historical significance to the community.
GREEN TENT ROAD, BLUESTONE FOUNDATIONS - Historical Significance
The site may hold historical significance to the local community given its association to the goldrush period and increased traffic passing through Meredith.
