THISTLE PLACE LIME KILN SITE - History
The site is marked on an 1850 plan of James Atkinson's Special Survey, falling within property leased to Mr Thomas Sinnot, one of the group of pioneer farmers that followed Atkinson to Port Fairy in the early 1840s. It is not known if Sinnot himself owned and/or operated the kiln. The annotation on the plan states that it is an "old lime kiln" thereby suggesting that it was likely in operation during the 1840s, yet by 1850 it was no longer in use. Further details regarding the type or form of construction and the size of the kiln are not known. The kiln appeared to be in operation for only around a decade, coinciding with early construction and establishment of Port Fairy township. The siting of the kiln close to the coast suggests that the kiln may have used shell from amongst the local dunes.THISTLE PLACE LIME KILN SITE - Interpretation of Site
