YACKANDANDAH CORDIAL FACTORY SITE - History
A search of the Parish and geological plans did not reveal further information about the layout, location and history of the site. No buildings are shown within the allotment on the 1856 survey of the Yackandadah Township, which is consistent with the cordial factory being opened in 1857.
Set up by John Hattersley (brief description in Heritage Study YAKT087 Freeman 2002:44) as cordial and soda water factory in 27 Windham Street. Evidence survives for the cordial factory at a Yackandandah private residence, including odd bottles. It operated until at least 1930.
John Hattersley was listed as a ginger beer manufacturer in Woolshed in the Ovens Directory from 1857 onwards.YACKANDANDAH CORDIAL FACTORY SITE - Interpretation of Site
The site was only inspected from the road, but this was sufficient to determine that there was some integrity to its residential section and the adjoining sheds, and therefore some potential for sub-surface archaeological structures and/or material culture associated with the 19t century cordial works. The plan of the site is not readily apparent and the site may also incorporate a range of later features. The land to the south, however, has been levelled and shaped to accommodate a new building and this would have impacted on any heritage material, if present.
YACKANDANDAH CORDIAL FACTORY SITE - Archaeological Significance
Parts of the location of 27 Windham Street, Yackandandah, and the land behind this property extending to Yackandandah Creek, are intact, and have an archaeological potential. Because similar evidence for commercial structures (cordial works) is not common in the region, further archaeological assessment is likely to provide a range of comparative data regarding the layout, chronology and other features of the site development.
YACKANDANDAH CORDIAL FACTORY SITE - Historical Significance
Site is significant as an industry established subsequently to the gold rush of the north region of Victoria.
