GEELONG-COLAC RAILWAY LINE/TORQUAY ROAD INTERSECTION ARTEFACT SCATTER - History
Little is known of the place. The property was acquired by Joseph Rowe in 1855 and a structure (house?) is shown on an ordinance survey map which was produced in 1923, but not published until 1928 (see attached). A structure is also shown at the location on current (2009) 1:30,000 maps. The Geelong-Colac Railway Line, opened in 1877, passes through the original allotment (Allotment H, Section 3) that the site is within and forms the current northern boundary of the property.
GEELONG-COLAC RAILWAY LINE/TORQUAY ROAD INTERSECTION ARTEFACT SCATTER - Interpretation of Site
The site contains portable historic relics of various ages on the ground surface. Some of these relics may const itute evidence of the former structure marked on a 1923 Ordinance Map (see attached) of the area. The varying ages of the relics may be indicative of occupation at the site over time.
GEELONG-COLAC RAILWAY LINE/TORQUAY ROAD INTERSECTION ARTEFACT SCATTER - Archaeological Significance
Based on the known evidence, the scatter has been assessed as having low archaeological significance due to its f ragmented nature and the various ages of the relics identified. However, the relics may constitute evidence of the former structure marked on a 1923 Ordinance Map (see attached) . It is considered possible, therefore, that remains ofthis structure may remain at the location, though are currently obscured by grass growth.
GEELONG-COLAC RAILWAY LINE/TORQUAY ROAD INTERSECTION ARTEFACT SCATTER - Historical Significance
The site has been assessed as having moderate historic value based on its potential as being represent ative of part of an influx of occupation to the broader area in the early 1900s. There is historic evidence (including the 1923 Ordina nce Map - see attached) of a number of homes being established in the broader area around the early 1900s.
