COLLINGS HOUSE - History
According to parish maps, J. Collings was present on the land from at least 1864. On Parish maps from 1926, 1947 and 1970, John Collings is named as being present on the land. During this time the block also included land east of Gardiners Creek, abutting Middleborough Road. An aerial of the area from 1945 shows a homestead complex immediately west of Gardiners Creek, on the northern boundary of the block. The complex appears to include a house, outbuildings, and five very large trees to the west and north, and a driveway extends north from the complex to Canterbury Road. Examination of available army ordinance maps dating to 1916 and 1923 did not reveal any evidence of the house.
COLLINGS HOUSE - Interpretation of Site
The historic artefacts excavated at the site suggest a family home from roughly the mid twentieth century. The activities represented are those of a domestic living space, most of the artefacts uncovered reflect daily life in the family home at this time. The artefacts include personal items such as buttons, beads, jewellery and writing slates and pencils which would suggest the presence of women and children. A multitude of domestic items were also uncovered, for example a great many pieces of broken glass from bottles and windows was found as well as pieces of ceramic indicating a variety of crockery. In addition, iron nails, bolts, hooks and a hammer head were uncovered as well as warped pieces of tin, animal bone, brick and a bullet casing point to the site as once being a small homestead. For a full list of artefacts see attached catalogue.
COLLINGS HOUSE - Archaeological Significance
The archaeological significance of this site is low. While a range and number of artefacts were uncovered the bulk of them do not indicate a site of any particular archaeological significance. Information obtained from the objects and materials excavated indicate that the site likely dates to between 1930 to 1970. According to army ordinance maps from 1916 to 1927 there was no house on the site. The first evidence of a house is a 1945 aerial photograph. The house is gone by the time of the next aerial photograph in 1970. It is unlikely that the site has the potential to answer any research questions or add to the body of archaeological data that already exists for this time period and area.
