Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Ballarat Barkly Street Methodist Church - Memorial Window Description & History
This was one of the the first church windows to feature an Australian digger as its subject, and was ordered from the studio of Fisher & Co., Watson's Lane, Melbourne in 1920.The firm was set up by Auguste Fischer in the early 1890s and, although Fischer died in 1916, the studio continued under the old name under the management of Fischer's draughtsman, Frank Warner, even after Brooks, Robinson & Co. purchased the stock and goodwill. As anti-German feeling increased, especially towards the end of the war, the studio changed its name to Fisher & Co., to avoid any suggestion that its previous owner was of German origin (Fischer was English). Although the window had no inscription, it included the extended dates of the war - 1914-1920 - below a representation of the AIF badge. A crown and crossed flags of Britain and Australia form the head of the central light, above the figure of the Australian soldier at the grave of his comrade. Chaplain-Major F.T.Cleverdon unveiled the three-light memorial window on 2 May 1920. It was designed as a tribute to the 24 men from the church who fell in the war, and cost £300.
