Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Melbourne Chapel of St. Peter, Missions to Seafarers Anglican Chapel - Memorial Window Description & History
Few windows by the Scots artist William Aikman (1868-1959) have been found in Australia but his Arts and Crafts style of stained glass is well known throughout England. From 1892, he worked for many years for James Powell & Sons, London after an apprenticeship at Ballantyne of Edinburgh. In 1913, Aikman set up his own studio in Campden Square before moving to Sutton, where this window was designed and made. The figure of St. Nicholas, patron saint to seafarers, iscomplemented by the beautiful portrait of the young sailor, set in a laurel wreath below the figure of the saint.
William Digges La Touche Balden, son of William Reginald and Mary Balden of Dewsbury, Yorkshire, was a 17-year old midshipman apprentice with the United Kingdom's Merchant Navy. He was one of four men killed when they were asphyxiated in the hold of the Samakand at Corio Wharf, North Geelong on 20 August 1945. He was buried at Fawker Memorial Park Cemetery, north of Melbourne.
