Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Malvern Holy Advent Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
The three-light east window at Holy Advent Anglican Church was unfilled with historiated glass when the building opened in 1910, however, only ten years later, the vestry determined to replace the existing east window with a larger three-light or a five-light window to appropriately recognise the contribution of church members to the First World War. Stained glass artist, William Montgomery, after considerable discussion with the Reverend EJB White, designed a complex five-light window based on the Coming of Christ with four smaller figures of Warrior Saints in the tracery lights; in keeping with the window's purpose, the AIF badge was located in the head of the arch. other symbols of the Christian faith filled the smaller tracery pieces in the arch.
Fund-raising began in 1920 and a glance at the Messenger shows that the Reverend White ensured the project was well publicised and, although it took some years, the congregation raised the necessary funds. Initially it was thought the window would cost -'more than £300-' but the final figure was £520, including a memorial brass. Painting commenced on 7 December 1922 and the window was unveiled and dedicated by Bishop Green on the 4 March 1923. An account (Job No. 4859) was sent to Mr. RE Merrett on 1 March. £200 was paid immediately and the balance paid by the 4 April 1923.
