Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at South Melbourne Paul the Apostle Methodist [now Uniting] Church - Memorial Window Description & History
When the melbourne glass company, EL Yencken & Co. re-opened itsglassbusinessafter the Second World War, it did not re-open the stained glass studio. Instead, the firm opted to outsource commissions to Alan Sumner (1910-1994) who had been assistant to William 'Jock' Frater (1890-1974) at Yencken's from 1925-1940. This was one window that went out under the Yencken name but was designed and made by Sumner. It is one of Sumner's earliest independent designs and owes much to Frater and the Yencken house-style. As a backdrop to Joshua Sumner depicted aircraft, a field hospital and naval destroyer as symbols of Australian military forces. Early sketches of the design are held in the Alan Sumner Collection, State Library of Victoria.
The window was unveiled on Sunday 26 May 1946, at which an address was delivered by Mr. Alex Conchie, a former Commissioner of the Red Cross. As indicated in the inscription, this window not only commemorated the men who served in the Second World War but also honoured the women of the parish who, in conjunction with TocH, supplied accommodation and meals for more than 31,000 men of the forces.
