Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Footscray St. John the Evangelist's Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
In the 1960's the Vicar of St. John's was the Reverend Ron Durance who had previously been in the 14/32 Infantry Battalion, the same army unit as two of of St. John's current parishioners in 2013, Mr George King and Mr Ray Ritchie. In 1921, 14 Battalion was formed as the 'Prahran Regiment' and 32 Battalion was raised as the 'Footscray Regiment'; the two merged in 1942, prior to military training in Queensland and embarkation for Papua New Guinea. According to George King, their Army Parade Services were held at St John's and at one of their annual Reunion Dinners the Reverend Ron Durance suggested that the battalion members might like to donate a memorial stained glass window to the church. The response was enthusiastic and sufficient funds were apparently raised there and then. Designer of the window was Melbourne stained glass artistsJohn Ferguson and Nick Papas, themselves veterans of the New Guinea campaign.
Instead of solely commemorating church members, the window was raised appropriately as a memorial to all servicemen and women from the City of Footscray and the Council Seal was included in the head of the arch, alongside emblems of the Army, Navy and Air Force. The window was dedicated on 27 April 1969 at the annual Anzac Day service.
