Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Portland St. Stephen's Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
Philip the Deacon was an unusual subject for a soldier memorial. It was commissioned as one of three lancets for the west window of the church, along with the Stoning of St. Stephen and John the Bishop. It is attributed to Joseph Stansfield of Phoenix Studios on stylistic grounds. Lieutenant Brown's mother Lillian and sister Marjorie were Portland Anglicans.
Lieutenant Keith Lorrence Brown was born in the final months of the First World War, on 26 September 1918. Married to Linda, nee Miller, a Private in the AWAS, Brown was a teacher with the Education Department when he enlisted at Adelaide River, Northern Territory. He was killed in action with the 2/32nd Battalion of the AIF at Burnei Bay, Borneo on 18 June 1945, aged 26 years and is commemorated in the Labuan War Cemtery.
