Statement of Significance
The site of the Former Queens Head Hotel has high potential for survival of building features such as post holes, drains, wall plates and foundations, as well as occupation deposits relating to 1856-1918 use as a hotel and 1918-1966 use as a farm and residence. Surface features and artefacts confirm there are some archaeological remains.
The site is of historical significance as a relatively rare goldfields period wayside inn, which served both the local Lockwood community and travellers to the North West of the colony. It reflects the once prosperous local community and the centre of Lockwood village, which has in the 20th century declined

FORMER QUEENS HEAD HOTEL - History
The Queens Head hotel was established on the Marong Road by at least 1856(1) as one of a number of
gold field hotels serving local miners and travelers to Victoria's North West. The hotel was licenced to
Simon Henry -1859, James C. Muir-1870, G Hollingworth-1879, Frederick Lennon-1886, Mary Lewis-1895,
Ann Schram-1895, Harriet Sarah Durley- 1895-1896(2) and Maria Elizabeth Murray-1896(3).
The hotel was run by Howard Chadwick in 1904, but in 1918, when the owners surrendered the licence, the
hotel was owned by the Bendigo United Co-operative Brewery Co. and licensed to William Andrew
Maxfield. Inspector Beckwith said the hotel building was very old, and if the license was to be continued the
place would require to be rebuilt. The property was valued at £5 per acre, for 10 acres of ground, and the
buildings were valued at £205(4).
After its loss of licence, the hotel appears to have been used as a residence and farm. By the 1960s, the
earliest part of the hotel may have been demolished, and a further section was identified as causing
obstruction to the intersection, which was notorious for fatal accidents. Road widening after 1966 probably
saw the buildings closest to the road removed(5).
