Statement of Significance
What is significant?
An individual Eucalyptus nicholii located on the nature strip outside 2 Christina Court, Warrnambool.
How is it significant?
This tree is significant for scientific, aesthetic and social reasons at the State level.
Why is it significant?
This tree is of scientific significance due to its outstanding size, height and girth for the species. It is one of the largest Narrow-leaved Black Peppermints in the township of Warrnambool. There are several other specimens within the township but they are subject to heavy trimming by council (due to powerlines).
The tree is also of scientific value as a source of propagation material. It is one of the few Narrow-leaved Black Peppermints in Warrnambool which is not lopped, thus enabling collection of seed which has been used by locals.
This specimen is also of aesthetic significance, as it exhibits excellent form including dense bark, strong branches and lots of vibrant leaves. The tree is flourishing in an urban setting and therefore its contribution to the landscape in an increasingly developing environment is socially significant. The tree provides habitat for a number of native animals such as a resident koala, grey-headed flying foxes and possums. There are no other examples of this species currently on the Register (2024).
