STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Newlands Homestead, consisting of a substantial single storey storehouse with slate roof and timber verandah, stone barn and appurtenant outbuildings is one of the finest of a significant group of mid 19th century homesteads in the Barrabool Hills. The residence was constructed in 1853 for James Piper who acquired the property from Swanston and Willis, district landholders in 1850. The Piper family played an important role in local government in the 19th century. The homestead group is picturesquely set in the Barrabool Hills and survives virtually intact.
