Highton Primary School - Physical Description 1
The Highton Primary School building at 212 Roslyn Road is situated on a substantial site. The building has a typical front setback of approximately 5 metres, but a wide setback at the side and rear, providing grassed areas. The single storey, horizontal weatherboard and unpainted brick, Victorian and interwar stripped Classical school building is characterised by two flanking steeply pitched gable roof forms linked by a traversing gable and a parapetted flat roofed central section that slightly projects towards the street frontage. These roof forms appear to be clad in corrugated galvanised iron. Narrow overhangs are a feature of the eaves. The flanking gable sections comprising the Victorian styled elements of the building have early timber framed double hung twelve paned windows arranged in triplet on the street facade, with upper three paned hopper sashes. An early decorative feature of these gabled wings are the gable ventilators. The ventilation stacks that adorn the ridge line are not original, but are an early feature of the design, possibly dating from the 1890s. The central, unpainted brick and parapetted section provides the interwar stripped Classical stylistic element to the design. A central, segmentally arched cement rendered opening is punctuated by a large keystone and flanked by unpainted brick pilasters with abstract concrete capitals and vertically-oriented cement rendered rectangular panels above. The crowning feature of this part of the building is the broken-arched signage that states "No. 304, Highton School", which is also flanked by the cement rendered vertically-oriented rectangular panels. These panels and the sign interrupt the cement rendered parapet with its brick banded capping and base. Symmetrically located about the central opening are two timber framed, double hung, twelve paned windows with concrete lintels.
