STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
'Elcho' at Lara a two storey basalt structure was erected c 1867 and enlarged c 1872 for John Galletly, is on of the most unusual picturesque gothic revival style homesteads in Victoria. This property has notable connection with the Armytage family, Elizabeth Galletly being the daughter of the powerful Victorian pioneer George Armytage. Later owners included H. M. Repartriation Department who used the property to train returned servicemen in agricultural management. Senator J. F. Guthrie owned the property from 1930-1971. The architect is unknown.
