Statement of Significance
The house located on W. Schultz's Road at Tarrington is a single storey symmetrical weatherboard house set in a garden of mature specimen trees. The land was first owned by Johann Christoph Krieg, who farmed the land with his wife and son. The exact date of construction of the house is not known, but it is likely to be late nineteenth or early twentieth century. There has been no architect or builder associated with the design of the house or layout of the garden. The garden includes several specimen trees including Araucaria bidwillii (Bunya Bunya Pine), Araucaria heterophylla (Hoop Pine), Phoenix Caneriensis (Canary island Palm) and other as yet unidentified treesthe twentieth century, the house was owned by Marius Jensen, an important apiarist, who was based at Tarrington. The house appears to be in good condition, and the garden appears to be in fair condition. Both house and garden appear to retain a fair degree of integrity.
How is it significant?
The Schultz residence is of historical significance to the community of Tarrington and the Southern Grampians Shire.
Why is it significant?
The Schultz residence is of historical significance for its association with the influential Tarrington family, the Kriegs, and for its later association with apiarist, Marius Jensen. The house and garden are of further historical significance as they provide a good (if neglected) example of the design and layout of medium size residential gardens in the Edwardian period.
