Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The former Grand View Store, built in 1888 for George Cooper as a grocery at 79 Holmes Road, Moonee Ponds is significant.

How is it signficant?
The former Grand View Store is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the City of Moonee Valley.

Why is it significant?
It is historically important as a late nineteenth century corner store, which is associated with the rapid residential development during the late nineteenth century land boom andrecalling an aspect of life preceding the era of the motor car. (Criterion A)

Aesthetically, its prominent position and design give it landmark status in its locale, making an important contribution to the historic character of the Holmes Road precinct. (Criterion E)

      GRANDVIEW STORE (FORMER) - Physical Description 1

      A prominent two storeyed Classical Revival former corner store with corner splay, balustraded parapet and pediment with the Australian coat of arms and "Advance Australia" in cast cement. There is a plain string course for signage (GRANDVIEW STORE is incised on both elevations and 1888 on the splayed corner) and arcaded timber shop windows. The walls are in white tuck pointed brickwork relieved by cement dressings and the windows have external architraves and entablatures. The building is in good condition and has a relatively high degree of external integrity. The verandah has been removed, the entry door replaced and windows altered.
