Statement of Significance
The complex known as Christ Church at nos.1074-1086 Mount Alexander Road, Essendon, was commenced in 1890, the present church having been dedicated in 1921. It is historically important for its place in the religious life of the Anglican community since 1890. The original church building is historically important as an early surviving building of its type and by virtue of its prominence in the streetscape recalling the nineteenth century history of the area. The main church is architecturally important as a picturesque Edwardian Free Style church (Criterion E) comparing with the work of G.F. Ballantyne at Eglinton Street, Moonee Ponds and with the work of Robert Haddon, more generally. It is of interest also for its association with the local architect, Daniel R. Dossetor.

CHRIST CHURCH COMPLEX - Physical Description 1
A picturesque Edwardian Free Style Gothic inspired red brick and unpainted stucco church with parapeted tower and engaged castellated turret. The nave and aisles have dominant gables with stuccoed ribs to the apexes, the west end also being enriched with an engaged castellated turret (the memorial chapel) in cement. Inside, black tuck pointed red brick walls support a varnished timber ceiling carried on arched trusses. The plan is cruciform with an arched crossing whilst the pews are original and have castellated ends. There is an organ manufactured by Roberts Limited (Melbourne).
The former church (now the hall) is of bi chrome brick in the Gothic Revival manner with a porch, buttressed side walls and both lancet and single point segmental windows. Inside, the ceiling is timber lined and there is an attached timber former Sunday school with pressed metal linings.
Condition: Sound. Integrity: High.
