ESSENDON TECHNICAL SCHOOL (FORMER) - Physical Description 1
Following the northern European way of coloured face brickwork, juxtaposed rectanguloids and cylinders, plus glass bricks, this is perhaps the best European modern building to arise under Public Works Chief Architect, Percy Everett.
Long steel window strips emphasise the parapetted, red Manganese salt-glazed and cream brick horizontality which stretches along both the Buckley and Hoddle Street alignments to meet at the typically offset 'vertical feature '. The latter is skilfully complicated by a semi-cylindrical element, with brick glazing, facing Buckley Street, whilst the main entrance block, with Gill sans lettering, faces Hoddle Street. A symbolic, tripartite tower frames the clerestory window group which both surmounts and underscores the cantilevering, concrete entrance canopy.
Mature landscaping of the period survives along the building facades.
