Statement of Significance
The former Ascot Vale (Union) Hall, later King George's Hall, the Ascot Vale Theatre and the Paramount Theatre was designed by the architect Jonathon Rankine and built in 1890.
It is historically and aesthetically important. It is historically important (Criterion A) as a public meeting place in Ascot Vale since 1890 and for its unusual capacity to demonstrate aspects of the early days of the moving picture industry which had its origins in the public halls of the metropolis. It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as an exceptionally dignified late Victorian building in the Municipality an amount of its upper level facade treatment which is distinguished by the elongated window proportions, the articulation of the facade and its return to the side elevations.

ASCOT VALE (UNION) HALL (FORMER) - Physical Description 1
A grandiose stuccoed Italianate public building with defaced street level facade but arresting upper level returning by the depth of a bay and being distinguished by its subdivision into pilastrated bays with a central surmounting pediment carried on pilasters proud of the facade line. There is a balustraded parapet with urns, plain frieze and aedicules to the windows which are distinguished by their vertically elongated proportions. The former theatre at the rear (not inspected) is of utilitarian design in red brick and appears to post date the front section as does the cantilevered verandah that has a decorated pressed metal fascia treatment presumably erected during the years when the building served as a picture theatre.
Condition: sound. Integrity: Medium, later verandah is contributory.
