Statement of Significance
The Shop and residence at no. 189 Union Road, Ascot Vale is understood to have been built in 1880 and was occupied in that year by Misses Carr and Starr as a drapery. It is aesthetically important. This importance (Criterion A) is derived from its capacity to demonstrate the stylistic transition between the Italianate facades of the Boom period and the then new Queen Anne mode, with its dependence on the use of red brick and Elizabethan influenced forms. The exceptionally rich ornamentation is unusual in the Municipality whilst the pedimented treatment is especially representative of the Queen Anne period.
