STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Christ Church Manse
26 Gray Street
The Anglican parsonage has regional significance for its architectural interest as a building designed within the domestic Gothic Revival style but with hints of the then newly fashionable Queen Anne style, seen especially in the cantilevered balcony. Its regional significance also lies in its historical associations with the Anglican Church which has played a major role in the development of Hamilton and the Western District. Designed in 1897 by the architect, J D Acre Moynan, ([i]) and completed by 1898, ([ii]) this 19th century parsonage has been occupied by a succession of clergymen, beginning with William F Tucker in the 1890s ([iii]) and Reginald Hayman at the turn of the century. ([iv])
The manse also shares the regional significance of the Christ Church complex. It is complimented by its simple but appropriate garden setting.
