STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Monivae College
Ballarat Road
After a false start at Monivae Homestead on the Port Fairy Road and some vacillations on the Ballarat Road, the Sacred Heart College which took its name from the old house was started in 1953. The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) had been asked to establish the school by the Bishop of Ballarat as early as 1946. ([i]) The architect, Lionel D San Miguel, designed the building. San Miguel had an extensive practice before and after the Second World War which included much work for the Catholic Church. He had designed the Sacred heart Monastery at Croydon, St Joseph's College in Warrnambool and St Anthony's Church, Fairfield. ([ii]) He turned from his successful work in the Spanish Mission style to a more austerely detailed International style building. It seems that he was influenced by American designs for colleges. ([iii]) The builder was R A Strahan who had his yard across the Ballarat Road. The Clerk of Works was Stan Mentz who had worked on the Croydon Monastery. ([iv])
The school opened for day-boys and boarders in 1954 and went co-ed in 1970, "developing a strong sporting tradition of which it is very proud". ([v]) The school takes its place beside the Hamilton and Western District College, other denominational schools and the various public schools in Hamilton to make the city an important regional educational centre. The building is of local significance for its architecture and brief history. The building is significantly intact and in excellent condition. One of the largest structures in Hamilton, Monivae College marks the entrance to Hamilton on the Ballarat Road.

[iii] His first design for the homestead site had three radiating wings, like Wesley College in Melbourne whose American origins are clearly established.
