Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: Still associated with the bowling club and greens, this building reflects one of the more important and popular recreational pastimes of Hamilton.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Bowling Club Rooms
rear 47 Gray Street
Built on land originally reserved for the Mechanics Institute and Free Library, this small timber building is of local historic and architectural interest. It seems to have been built about the turn of the century and was possible designed by Frank Hammond the Town Clerk, Engineer and architect who was so active at the time. (i) He designed the public buildings for the improvement of Melville Oval in 1904 and many other public and private buildings around the town. It is a modest example of the Federation style and typical ofd its type. The building remains substantially intact and is in good condition. As a recreational building it is an important adjunct to the cultural pursuits of the main Mechanics Institute building.
