Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The potential archaeological remnants of seven terrace houses built circa 1890 and demolished circa 1980 and former outbuildings of the existing hotel beneath the open asphalt car park and driveways of the Albion Charles Hotel at 2 Charles St, Northcote and 40 Merri Parade, Northcote. The whole of the open asphalt car park south of the Albion Charles Hotel bottle shop and the driveways and car parking area immediately surrounding the Albion Charles Hotel are significant.
There is limited archaeological potential under the footprint of the extant Albion Charles Hotel
How is it significant?
The former Merri Parade Terraces and Albion Family Hotel is of local historical and archaeological significance to Darebin City.
Historically, it is significant for its association with the development of the suburb of Northcote being one of the earliest rows of terrace houses built in the area.
Archaeologically, it is significant for its potential to contain intact remains of the footings and occupation deposits associated with the terrace buildings. It is also significant for the potential of those remains and deposits to yield information about residential material culture dating to the late boom period of the nineteenth century through to the modern period.
