St Aidan's Church of England - Physical Conditions
St Aidan's Church of England is located on allotment 4, section 14 within the township of Berringa, Parish of Clarkesdale.
The church is constructed of pressed red brick, with a shallow pitched corrugated iron roof which is unusually shallow for a building from the Gothic stream. The style is perhaps best described as Federation Gothic. Two red brick turrets survive and extend beyond the roof line, capped with unpainted cement render. A photograph taken in 1924 shows a simple timber cross mounted on the roof apex, but this fixture does not survive today. A decorative half timber gablet protrudes slightly forward of the main gable with rough cast cement stucco between vertical timbers located on the eastern elevation. A small red brick porch serves as an entrance to the church. It features a single leadlight shouldered-arch window, with unpainted cement rendered sill & lintel. It has a corrugated iron skillion roof. The bluestone foundation stone is located on the eastern elevation of the porch. Another single leadlight shouldered-arch window, also with an unpainted cement rendered sill & lintel is located in the traditional position of a rose window. The church features three bays with three lancet arch lead light windows and a series of four decorative red brick buttresses capped with unpainted cement render gablets. The church features six vents located on the roof and four ventilators situated on the north and west elevations between the arch windows. The church is in very good condition and retains a high degree of integrity.
A rear corrugated iron clad skillion is located adjacent to the southern elevation of the church, constructed during the late 20th century, with two aluminum sliding windows and a red brick toilet block aligned to the north. A neat white picket fence runs along the southern boundary, there are no significant plantings within the church grounds.
