Statement of Significance
The Mornington Pier is of local historical, social and archaeological significance. The pier has been influential in shaping the development of Mornington and is historically important for its association with bay trade during the mid 19th century. The pier is of local social significance for its continuing association with passive recreational activities including promenading and angling. There is some potential for archaeological deposits to be located on the seafloor adjacent to the existing pier and areas where additions were once located, for example, the area of the former "L"-shaped extension.

MORNINGTON PIER - History
The heritage overlay for the pier includes the section that is no longer extant which used to kick out in an 'L' shape seaward in the late 19th century. Essentially there are three sections to the pier. It originally dates to 1857. The first jetty consisted of a bluestone breakwater. In the 1870's a timber pile extension was added. Several phases of modification and change have occured to the structure, which is integral to its history and refelcts the economic and social requirements of the area. The third section was first constructed in 1948 after the northern arm was demolished. It has been more than 50 years since major construction works have occured on site. Minor alterations have taken place since then however and include the replacement of decking timbers along with various wave minimisation works. In 1979 a rock wave screen was constructed at the base of the western section, extending from Schnapper Point. In 1985, the outer section was reconstructed and close piled. The timber walkway was replaced on the leeway side in 1995.MORNINGTON PIER - Interpretation of Site
