Statement of Significance
The Sandford Cemetery is located approximately 2 kilometeres to the south west of the town, on Portland -Casterton Road. Although there are several private burial grounds associated with large pastoral concerns in the area, many local townspeople and pastoralists are buried in the Sandford Public Cemetery. The earliest burials, evident on headstones date from the 1840s, and continue to current burials. The layout is typical of 19th century cemeteries, evoking an atmosphere of dignity and repose. The Cemetery is in good condition generally, and retains a high degree of integrity.
How is it significant?
The Sandford Cemetery is of historical, social and aesthetic significance to Glenelg Shire.
Why is it significant?
The Sandford Cemetery is of historical significance as an enduring record of those who have lived and died in the community, as a reflection of passing phases, ways of life and death, particular events, and as documentary evidence.
The cemetery is of social significance for reflecting the customs and tastes of the community, for reflecting different religious values, and for reflecting different economic and social status. It is also important as a place of passive recreation, with many family history researchers and tourists quietly visiting and walking through the graves every year.
The Sandford Cemetery is of aesthetic significance for its range of tombstones, memorials and iconography reflecting the aesthetics of different periods and groups within the community. It is also of interest for its overall design and position within the broader landscape.

SANDFORD CEMETERY - Physical Description 1
The Sandford Cemetery Reserve is located on the Portland-Casterton Road, some two kilometres south west of the township of Sandford. The gravestones and unmarked graves are enclosed in a roughly triangular area of approximately ten acres, the perimeter of which is defined by a modern fence. A perimeter planting of pines has been cut down recently.
The graves are grouped in the conventional manner. According to denominations. There are no structures on the site, although a number of graves have small memorial plantings on them, and some graves have very large imposing tombstones. It appears that some graves have had large plantings (trees) which have been removed due to the damage they were causing to the graves.
The graves of many families who made important contributions to the development of the Sandford and district community are located in the cemetery. The earliest recorded burial is from 1854, two years prior to the survey of the township of Sandford.SANDFORD CEMETERY - Physical Conditions
