Statement of Significance
The Casterton Old Cemetery is located in a nine acre reserve five kilometres west of the centre of the township of Casterton, in Old Cemetery Road. It is Casterton's first Cemetery, although the Cemetery referred to as Casterton New Cemetery was actually gazetted prior to it. The burials date from the mid 1840s (but the earliest gravestone is dated 1854) and burials continued until 1964. The layout is typical of a simple nineteenth century cemetery, set on a gentle rise overlooking the town. The graves are laid out in typical denominational fashion. A number of indiegenous trees have grown throughout the cemetery, lending it a peaceful bush setting, enhanced by the indigenous spring wildflower display which appears. The Cemetery is in excellent condition, and retains a high degree of integrity.
How is it significant?
The Casterton Old Cemetery is of historical, architectural and social significance to Glenelg Shire.

OLD CEMETERY - Physical Description 1
The Casterton Old Cemetery Reserve is located on Old Cemetery Road, some five kilometers west of the central commercial area of Casterton. The gravestones and unmarked graves are enclosed in a roughly square reserve of approximately nine acres, the perimeter of which is defined by a modern fence. (hairpin fence)
The graves are grouped in the conventional manner, according to denominations. There are no structures on the site, although a number of graves have small memorial plantings on them. It appears that some graves have had large plantings (trees) which have been removed due to the damage they were causing to the graves. Many indigenous trees have grown on the site, giving the cemetery a peaceful bushlike setting, enhanced by the display of remnant indigenous ground flora which appears each spring.
The graves of many families who made important contributions to the development of the Casterton community are located in the cemetery.OLD CEMETERY - Physical Conditions
