Statement of Significance
The ruins of State School 741 are located one kilometre south east of the township of Bridgewater, on the corner of Blowholes Road and Bridgewater Road. The ruins are of stone, and the roof has been removed. The walls are unstable and there are woody weeds overtaking the site. The school started in 1864, as the proposed township began to grow, and the large families located on the Cape felt that the existing Lower Bridgewater School (no. 32) was too far to travel. It is not known who constructed the building, but it was likely to have been local stone mason Joshua Black. The ruin has potential to yeild much archaelogical information.
How is it significant?
The ruins of State School 741 are of historical and archaelogical significance to the Glenelg Shire.
Why is it significant?
The ruin is of historical significance as physical remnants of the first and only school built on the Cape at Bridgewater. Its construction and abandonment reflect the changing needs and demographic of the Cape Bridgewater families and their lives. It has the potential to yeild significant archaelogical finds, and therefore has archaelogical significance.
