Statement of Significance
St. Catherine's (Former) Anglican Church is a small timber building in the 'Carpenter' Gothic style located in the hamlet of Red Cap (otherwise known as Warrock), on the south west side of the Casterton-Naracoorte Road, some 24 km north of Casterton. The weatherboard Church has timber framed windows and doors, in the shape of simple Gothic arches. The interior is lined with timber panelling, including a panelled coved ceiling. The church is set in half an acre (.2ha) of gardens, which have been planted out with European trees including Ulmus (Elms) and a pair of Washingtonia filifera (California Fan Palm) which are planted either side of the entrance to the church. These trees were planted in 1937 to commemmorate the extensive support and assistance which the Simpson family of Roseneath had provided the church since its beginnings in 1905-1907. The church was built in 1905, after the land and the timber were donated by an important parishioner, the pastoralist Mr. Charles Simson, owner of nearby Roseneath, much of which was subdivided and sold about the same time. For sixty years regular services had been held in the nearby Red Cap Common School. St Catherine's Church is one ofmany built at this time in response to a movement encouraging small, but growing congregations to build their own church buildings rather than to continue holding services in other buildings. Although dedicated to St. Catherine of Sienna, the inspiration for the patron saint came from the name of Mrs. Catherine Simson. Most of the trees which survive were planted as a memorial to Mr. Simson to recognise his and his family's long association and great generosity towards the congregation. The church and the gardens remain in very good condition with a very high degree of integrity. The building and land was recently sold into private ownership.
How is it significant?
St. Catherine's (Former) Anglican Church is of historical and social significance to the community of Red Cap and the Glenelg Shire.
Why is it significant?
St. Catherine's (Former) Anglican Church and its setting are of historical significance because they represent a movement in the Anglican Church around the turn of the century, facilitated by local patronage, to establish independent facilities. It is of further historical significance as the expression of the role and position of the Anglican Church and its congregation in the community for over one hundred and fifty years. The church is significant socially because it represents a change in the social conditions of the area when the congregation grew as a result of closer settlement in the late nineteenth century.
