ELTHAM STUDY STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:
This very mature remnant of the former indigenous landscape is a local landmark tree of significant size and age, and possibly predates the first clearing for aqricultural purposes. This Manna Gum tree is also of interest as a representative example of a local vegetation type prior to European settlement in this area. The ongoing protection of trees such as this has been strongly supported by Eltham Shire residents in recent decades.
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (with AHC criteria) 2001
This MANNA GUM on the ELTHAM-YARRA GLEN ROAD, ('Eucalyptus viminalis') is significant to Kangaroo Ground:
- as a mature remnant of the former indigenous landscape (Criterion A4, 82);
- as a local landmark tree of significant size and age (Criterion E1);
- as an indicator of the era of the first clearing for agricultural, purposes (Criterion A4); and
- as the focus of ongoing protection of trees such as this, strongly supported by former Eltham Shire residents in recent decades (Criterion G1).

Despite its proximity to the road, this tree is in good health, with good foliage density and very little dead wood in the canopy. With a trunk diameter of approximately 1,200 mm, this tree is well in excess of 100 years old and possibly much older.

Despite its proximity to the road, this tree is 'in good health, with good foliage density and very little dead wood in the canopy. With a trunk diameter of approximately 1,200 mm, this tree is well in excess of 10,0 years old and possibly much older. REVISED OR EXTENDED DESCRIPTON: This tree is located on the road verge at 34211DE, 5825552N, in line with the dividing boundary. of 115 and 125 ELTHAM-YARRA GLEN ROAD and is approximately 15-16m high. It is thought to be rare within the locality.
'Eucalyptus viminalis' , This species, first collected by J. J. Labillardiere in 1799, has a wide distribution in eastern Australia from South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and to the Queensland border. It has smooth, whitish bark except at the base ofthe trunk, which is rough. Its upper limbs shed bark in long ribbons, hence the common name ribbon gum. It is the most common food tree of the koala and grows to 180 ft (55 m) tall.
