TERRACE HOUSES - Physical Description 1
18 to 28 Brunswick Street, East Brunswick is a series of six Victorian boom style single storey terrace houses with elaborate parapets. The terraces at 18,20,26 and 28 are the most intact.
Most of the terraces are now painted brick but appear to have originally been bi-chrome brick with unpainted rendered parapets (see Nos. 20 and 26). The terraces utilise two designs: two pairs of more ornate terraces (Nos. 18-20 and 26-28) bookend a simpler pair of terraces (Nos. 22-24). The terraces are differentiated by the design of the parapet. The simpler parapets have a central broken pediment flanked by small volutes; the end pairs of terraces have an elaborate series of entablatures, pediments and stylised volutes. Nos. 22 and 24 project further towards the street. Doors are typically four panel with highlights and windows are typically double-hung sashes with double-hung sidelights. Nos. 22, 24 and 26 have retained their original cast iron palisade fences. The front fences to the remaining terraces have been altered.
Note: The volute used on the parapet is stylistically similar to a device used by architect Norman Hitchcock (see 'Victorian Stucco', pp.46-47by Miles Lewis).TERRACE HOUSES - Physical Conditions
