Statement of Significance
The site of a significant representative cottage burnt down during the progress of this study, this place still contains mature exotic planting that illustrates the garden setting that such dwellings had during the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as this tree of individual importance. Pre 1940 gardens and planting are now rare anywhere in the Shire of Eltham, due to both the basic nature of the pre 1940 lifestyle and the affluence that has taken over the rural area since 1970. Canary Island Palm trees were very popular during the early 20th century as an ornamental plant and its use here probably indicates that this garden was a more decorative one previously.

Pre 1940 gardens and planting are now rare anywhere in the former Shire of Eltham, due both to the basic nature of the pre 1940 lifestyle and the affluence that has taken over the rural areas since 1970. REVISED OR EXTENDED DESCRIPTON:The gabled weatherboard cottage associated with this palm has been demolished.
Nearby is the new and unrelated St Peters church building. The palm is 11m high and 650mm diameter and located at AMG 341248,5833042. To the south is a small but old apricot tree.
'PHOENIX CANARIENSIS'This massive palm from the Canary Islands grows to 50 ft (15 m) tall with a spread of 30 ft (9 m), and has a sturdy trunk up to 3 ft (1 m) across and arching, deep green fronds up to 12 ft (3.5 m) long. Small yellow flowers in drooping clusters in summer are succeeded by inedible, orange-yellow, acorn-like fruit. This palm needs plenty of room to show off its dramatic symmetrical shape. In areas prone to frosts, plant an advanced specimen when the danger of frost has passed { Botanica}:
