Statement of Significance
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010
What is significant?
The c1900 hawthorn hedge and the post and rail fence remains (see also HO44, HO52 & HO80)
How is it significant?
The hawthorn hedge is historically and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
The post and rail fence remains are historically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
Why is it significant?
The hedge is historically significant because the planting of Hawthorn hedges reflects the adoption of European farming techniques by the Nutfield population in the period following settlement and because the grid pattern of paddocks that the Hawthorn hedges define is very different to today's farm landscapes (Criterion A). The hedges are historically significant because such planting is now rare in or around the Melbourne area and this is one of the only parts of the Shire of Nillumbik in which hedges still grow (Criterion B). The hedges are aesthetically significant because they grow to three metres in height and, in the undulating landscape, form a major landscape feature (Criterion E).
The post and rail fence is historically significant because fences of this sort and which are more than fifty years in age are very rare within the municipality and because the presence of fences is a reminder of the Shire's early settlement by farmers (Criteria A & B).
