Statement of Significance
Mentone was erected in1885 for Michael Morgan. The two storey brick structure has a two storey cast iron verandah. The rendered cornice and parapet include a pedimented name plate. The centrally located ground floor entrance is set below street level and approached by a descending flight of steps.
Mentone is a notable example of the large townhouse in the boom style. It has a typical composition. The brick surrounds to the arched openings and the facade sunken below the street are particularly notable. The cast iron balustrade and frieze panels are interesting. It is an essential element of the Parkville area and a typical exampleof a building type which is a distinctive feature of inner suburban Melbourne.
The brick facade (behind the verandah) has been painted. The cast iron palisade fence is compatible with the house.
