Statement of Significance
What is significant? The pipe organ built in 1873 by George Fincham for The New Church, East Melbourne is an intact example of the builder's work of the period that is complemented by an attractive case in the Gothic style. It is visually and tonally similar to the Fincham organ now at St James-the-Less Anglican Church, Mount Eliza, built in the same year.
How is it significant? The organ is significant for historic, aesthetic and technical reasons at a regional level.
Why is it significant? The pipe organ at Bernies Music Land, Ringwood is significant for the following reasons:
. It is an example of a small church organ of the period by the leading Melbourne organbuilder George Fincham;
. The instrument remains mechanically and tonally intact;
. The instrument has an attractive Gothic case although the finishes of the casework and facade pipes have been altered;
. It was originally associated with The New Church (or Swedenborgian Church) by whom it was commissioned and the only pipe organ owned by this small denomination;
. It is the earliest organ in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
