Statement of Significance
The Breeze is a work by Edward Ginger, commissioned when his maquette won the first Eltham Art Awards in 1990. The work comprises a series of flat, cut-out shapes, made of steel, welded together at different angles and painted bright orange-red.
The Breeze is significant for aesthetic reasons at a Local level. The Breeze, in its material (steel) and composition (abstract shapes) is an aesthetic contrast to the more rural feel of its surroundings (although recent housing development on the opposite side of the road has diminished this impact somewhat). Some of the component shapes, however, can be interpreted as organic while others have a range of references such as a window as seen in suburban life, flame-like shapes as in a bushfire, the eye-shape perhaps representing the sun. Shapes appear to be fanned by the breeze (or, given the site, by the passing traffic). These contrasts between suburban and rural life represent the history of the Eltham area as what was a small village is swallowed by suburbia. For many years, Melbourne had remarkably few examples of contemporary sculpture, while the suburbs had virtually none. Eltham Shire was one of the very few municipalities or Shires to commission public works and The Breeze was the first sculpture commissioned under the Eltham Art Awards program in 1990.
