Statement of Significance

Longacres, built in 1924-25 as the residence of eminent artist Sir Arthur Streeton (1867-1943), is of national historical significance as the only surviving building associated with Streeton, one of Australia's great landscape painters who defined the Australian landscape for Australian and English audiences. Longacres was visited by many artists, musicians and academics, including Streeton's lifelong friend Tom Roberts. The notable shingled bungalow, designed by Streeton and architect Desbrowe Annear with arts and crafts influences, and the layout of the grounds are much as they were in Streeton's time. Also of interest are the garden studio which has unusual half timbering on some of the walls, the caretaker's cottage and the garden, much of which was created by Streeton who planted such species as lindens, conifers and tulip trees.
