Statement of Significance
Lauderdale Homestead, Alfredton is a single storied homestead, the second on the property, built for Jock Winter in 1863 to the design of architect J. A. Doane. The homestead and outbuildings are constructed in bluestone with slate roofs. The house is symmetrical with coursed bluestone walls, relieved by quions and window surrounds and a recessed entrance. The verandah has distinctive columns and bracketed eaves. Stepped gables distinguish an outbuilding.
Lauderdale Homestead is an early and elaborate house of architectural importance for its detailing. In a classically-derived style, the house and its outbuildings are notable as a representative example of such residential complex of the period. The use of bracketed eaves to the verandah is extremely unusual. Both house and outbuildings are of note for their bluestone detailing, the stepped gables and chimney of one outbuilding being particularly distinctive.
Lauderdale Homestead has been subdivided to such an extent that it is now surrounded by suburbia and some buildings are on other properties.
